December 18, 2010 - China ADCC Pro Trials and Inagural China Open

Kylin BJJ Club went to Shanghai to compete in the ADCC Pro Trials, held for the first time ever in China. at the same time, the Wrestling & Judo Association Jiujitsu Committee of China also hosted the inaugural China Open. our competitors were our Coach Thomas Fan, Andy, Victor, Jocky, Lung, Samir, Quenton and Luk.

China ADCC Pro Trial results:
in White & Blue Belts Open weight under 74kg, Andy took Silver, just missing an all-expenses paid trip to Abu Dhabi! in the Brown Belts, Thomas took Bronze!

China Open results:
Andy also took a Bronze in his weight, Victor took Bronze in his division, Jockey took Bronze as well, Quenton took a Silver, and in the White Belt Absolute, Samir took the Gold!

the event was held in a gymnasium that had no heat. in 0 degrees temperature, everyone was walking around in gis AND jackets. aside from a slow start and a bit of disorganization, it was a nice competition, with over 100 competitors from all over Asia in attendance. each ring had an electronic score system that showed the points and time on a large screen tv which made it very audience-friendly. and the finals were broadcast live to Abu Dhabi.

after the competition, we had a great time exploring Shanghai: the Bund at day and night, Yuyuan Garden for siulongbao, the French Concession and more good food.

heard after the 2010 Thailand Open BJJ tournament: "NOW I think I know what BJJ is!"

a famous quote by Samir after his first competition!

KYLIN BJJ sent a group of five guys to compete at this year's wildly successful Thailand Open. Mike, Samir, Quentin, Dave and our Instructor Thomas Fan all competed in both the gi and no gi tournaments and achieved some medals:

Michael: Bronze, Adult Gi Blue 90kg
Samir: Bronze, Adult Gi White 70kg
Thomas Fan: Bronze, Adult Gi Brown Heavy
Bronze, Adult No Gi Elite 100kg
Gold, Masters No Gi Elite Absolute

even though Quentin didn't medal, he had an amazing 6 fights with 3 wins. Dave had two tough fights and he did extremely well at his first event. it was really exciting to watch Thomas compete as well. i was so proud that our team put it all on the mat, and came home with lots of new things to work on. the full results can be found at the Thailand Open 2010 results page.

Thomas brought along Charlotte and baby Isabella, who has now become the youngest Kylin member to go to a competition. i went as well, and ran a ring for the no gi competition (which means i had a ringside seat all day). we had a great time at the event, organized by the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Association of Thailand, mostly because it was run very smoothly even though there were 266 competitors. and the afterparty was the stuff of legend. and secret.

get ready for the Shanghai ADCC trials!!!
