last Wednesday, June 30, Kylin BJJ held their first in-house jiu jitsu competition at TRIQUEST. the white belt category was split into just two divisions: under and over 72kgs. six guys participated in the 'heavy' division and nine in the 'light'. visiting blue belt Alexander from Panama City gave two game exhibition fights with Kylin blue belts Mike and Andy. a big CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who participated!
about 20 people packed the gym to fight, watch and help. weigh-ins started at 7pm and then the matches were made, followed by Thomas explaining the rules and scoring. during the warm up, the guys really showed such serious faces! check out Boyee's Facebook album to see what i'm talking about. the tournament got under way shortly after 8pm and since most of the matches went the distance, the competition lasted 2 hours.
our 'light' category competitors were Samir, Lok, Jocky, Jay, Steven, Dave, Dixon, Jimmy and Derek. for some of them it was their first-ever BJJ competition so they were definitely amped up. Samir, Jay, Steven and Jimmy progressed to the semi-finals. Samir won his first mach with a guillotine and Jimmy with a triangle. they both progressed to meet in the final. the whole club was cheering both guys on and the match was heated right up to 4:48 when Jimmy got a bow and arrow choke. great show, both guys!the 'heavy' division was just as exciting. Lung, Terry, Ken, Yiu, Victor and Quinton participated. Victor, Yiu and Lung progressed, which put Lung and Yiu up against each other. they went the distance and the 15 year old Lung ("The Tree") showed great power. Yiu got the win by one point and met Victor in the final. it was a great back-and-forth match between these guys, and they really showed good heart and technique. congratulations goes to Victor who won on points.
